    Current Radio Program:

    DC Central Kitchen trains people for culinary jobs, provides food for under-served populations and operates food preparation and distribution services in cooperation with forty-two colleges throughout the United States. Most of the people they train have criminal histories or are under the supervision of the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (CSOSA). Participants have very high rates of program completion and placement within the culinary industry.

    DC Central Kitchen works with the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency’s VOTEE (Vocational Opportunities for Training, Education and Employment) unit. VOTEE provides assessment and preparation for people on supervision to complete educational objectives and enter the workforce.

    Examining what employers need and communicating with employers differently: These are the keys to the Employer-Driven Employment Model, a new framework developed by the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) for improving the employment outcomes of job seekers with criminal histories. In this program, we uncover the four parts of the model and examine how savvy correctional organizations might engage with employers by following a comprehensive program of public relations, marketing, and community outreach.

    Guests on the show include included John Rakis, consultant to NIC, and Francina Carter, Correctional Program Specialist and Program Manager of Offender Workforce Development for the National Institute of Corrections.

    The program interviews P. Elizabeth Taylor, Correctional Program Specialist for the National Institute of Corrections (NIC), part of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, U.S. Department of Justice.

    The topic is Transforming Offender Employment. The show challenges listeners to rethink their concept of what effective workforce development services entail. The transformation of the field is to move beyond simply helping offenders find a job to helping them learn the skills they need to develop a long-term attachment to the workforce.

    The show also highlights the array of instruction and DVDs that NIC offers for training correctional and parole and probation staff on evidence-based methods of helping reentering offenders find and retain employment upon release.
